But Before I give it to him: a story.
I was subbing for another teacher last week and we were discussing current events, per his lesson plan (fellow Social Studies RockStar!)
I have long said how much I love the generation I have the privilege to teach and learn from. I call them the “Swipers,” and I respect the crap outta them.
This is why:
A 6th grade girl raised her hand and told us why she doesn’t like “Mr. Trump.” Here are her words:
“My father owns a local country club and when I was younger my friend and I asked Mr. Trump for his autograph. He was at my dad’s club for an event. He looked at us and asked us ‘Do you have any money?'”
Disgusting. And telling.
But back to why I owe him a Thank You (my facebook rant last week):
I have gratitude in my heart today. And I’m grateful for this election. And yes even Donald Trump. Because at least his asinine sexist comments got us all talking again. and to agree on something. about sexual assault and what it looks like and what it means. What consent is. And how important it is. how bad it sucks to be marginalized and oppressed and stereotyped.
We can all relate to that on some level.
I’m grateful for Bernie Sanders for making it cool to be a socialist again. Apparently there are many of us out there. wink emoticon;)
I’m grateful to Hillary Clinton for reminding me that, as a woman, there are certain things in this world that are still not equal and we have a long way to go. The double standard is alive and well.
But I am mostly thankful for the Khan family and other families like them. The real America. The America of many backgrounds and different ways of life and experiences that make us who we are.
I love this country and I’m also excited for this election to be over so I can go back to being an appropriate person on Facebook and a calm person in my regular life.
But I really hope we can remember the things that were good in this election because that was there too. hard to find but it was there.
